Sailing for Liberty is an abstract painting that initially started as painting shapes. As I painted, as I often do, I flipped the painting upside down and then the composition really came into being. I felt the painting took on the look of a boat sailing around something. It hit me that the square was similar to Ellis Island in New York. I added the small silver square in the center of the larger square to vaguely (in m mind) indicate the Statue of Liberty. This piece became a conversation on the larger issue of immigration. This piece was painted using oil paint and cold wax medium on a cradled board. The sides have been fully painted and there is no need for a frame. It is wired and ready to hang. I predominately use oil paint mixed with cold wax, painted in multiple layers to create my paintings. I typically include lots of textures in my paintings. I use several tools in my painting, including squeegees, chop sticks, palette knives, corrugated cardboard and other mark making items. Often, I have no notion or plan of what the painting will be when I begin. I just let the painting decide the composition and when it is complete. Sometimes it takes months or longer. Artwork is signed and dated on the back.
